EMDR
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a type of therapy that reduces stress associated with traumatic memories. It is based on the theory that events from the past influence behaviors in the present. The first aim of EMDR is to reduce the body’s reactions to traumatic memories, such as accelerated heart rate, emotional shut down, or racing adrenaline. The second aim of EMDR is to change the core thinking created by the event, such as “I am dirty,” “I am not lovable,” or “I do not matter.” EMDR works with specific one-time events and with more entrenched developmental and complex trauma. EMDR can also be used to reduce addiction cravings. With EMDR, memories and messages from the past are no longer “the” event of your life, but part of the adventure you choose to live.
All EMDR sessions are offered in person
Yoga
Yoga is an ancient practice, but modern research shows that it helps in reducing stress associated with daily life and trauma. With practice, the physical aims of yoga; balance, strength, and flexibility, extend to the mind. This releases physical tension, restores the body-mind connection, and steadies the nervous system. I also teach the breath and movement of yoga as a grounding technique in dissociation. With yoga, the anxiety that races to the future or the depression that stays lodged in the past decreases and present moment becomes the aim of the journey.
Individual yoga sessions are in person, trauma informed, and non denominational. See ‘Groups and Retreats’ for information on group yoga sessions.
Nature Therapy
At the core of nature therapy is the experience of feeling better after time among the trees, by the water, or in the grass. Just by being outside nature reduces inflammation and helps in healing. When nature is combined with a therapeutic relationship, the outside world becomes rich with metaphors that guide through stress and examine relationships with self and others. When combined with groups, the natural world opens us up to experiences of connection, community and care.
On these three levels, I offer outside meditations, walk and talk therapy sessions, and group experiences.
For more information on group experiences, see ‘Groups and Retreats.’
Decluttering & Organization
Like our minds, our homes get cluttered with old ideas, outdated systems, and unfinished projects that bring us out of the present moment and create a lot of stress. I help individuals and families that are facing downsizing moves, other transitions, or creating organization systems for beloved treasures. This includes going through old memories together, collaborating on a new home for treasures, creating rituals of release if needed, and walking together therapeutically through the transformation of a space.
All decluttering services begin with an introduction to the space and an assessment of how I can help.
Groups and Mini Retreats
A classic image of therapy is group therapy because we heal among others. Groups are effective because we hear from others the very thing we are struggling with, and we are suddenly not alone in facing our hard. A good group belongs to the group and the therapist is only the mediator.
